Last week the CRSF staff embarked on a weeklong trip to Texas to work with the Texas Alliance Boys & Girls Clubs. The goal of the trip was to introduce the Healthy Choices, Healthy Children curriculum and play some Quickball with local Boys & Girls Clubs in Austin, Pharr and Corpus Christi, Texas.
Brooke, Jeff, Scott and I flew into Austin, TX for the first leg of the trip. Friday included staff training at the Boy & Girls Club of Austin, followed by a fun-filled clinic Saturday morning. The clinic could not have happened without the help of amazing volunteers including the students involved in Greek life at UT Austin, the St. Edwards men’s and women’s soccer team, and local high school athletes. Also, a big thank you to Walmart for donating lunch to the event!
Our next stop on our road trip led us to Pharr, Texas, for two days. First up on Monday was Liberty Middle School, where we played Quickball with over 600 kids during their PE classes. My favorite part of the day was getting to see all the kids smiling and having fun! Tuesday was staff training for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pharr and surrounding clubs in the area.
The last leg of the trip was Wednesday, where we drove into Corpus Christi. The day started with fantastic staff training at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Corpus Christi followed by Quickball games with two of their local clubs. The weather was beautiful, and the kids were full of great energy. They really enjoyed Quickball and were sad to see us go.
After Corpus Christi, we drove to San Antonio where we the Great Texas Road Trip officially ended. It was such a great trip, where I got to spend 7 days with three phenomenal colleagues. There was plenty of time for group bonding during the trip. Highlights include:
· Visiting the LBJ (Lyndon B Johnson) Presidential Library in Austin
· Going to the Alamo in San Antonio
· Exploring the San Antonio Riverwalk
· And my personal favorite…listening to Scott snore in the back of the car as we drive from city to city
