Calvin G. Butler, Jr.

Board Chairman

Calvin Butler is president and chief executive officer of Exelon. Butler oversees Exelon’s six localĀ  electric and natural gas companies – Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO andĀ  Pepco. Together, they form the nation’s largest utility company by customer count, servingĀ  approximately 10 million electric and gas customers in New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware,Ā  Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. He serves as chairman of each utility’s board and also chairs Exelon’s executive committee.

Professional History

Prior to being promoted to CEO on Dec. 31, 2022, Butler had been president and chief operating officerĀ  of Exelon. Previously, he served in roles of increasing responsibility at Exelon, including seniorĀ executive vice president and COO (2021), Exelon Utilities CEO (2019) and as CEO of BGE from 2014 toĀ 2019. Prior to that role, Butler served as BGE’s senior vice president for Regulatory and ExternalĀ Affairs. He also held various leadership positions at ComEd, including senior vice president ofĀ Corporate Affairs and vice president of Governmental and Legislative Affairs. Before joining Exelon in 2008, Butler held senior leadership roles in external affairs as well asĀ manufacturing with the print, digital and supply chain solutions company R.R. Donnelley. ButlerĀ spent his early career with Central Illinois Light Company (CILCORP, Inc.), where he worked inĀ government affairs, legal and strategy.

Industry and Civic Involvement

Butler serves as the vice chair of the Board of Directors for the Edison Electric Institute (EEI).Ā He is on the Board of Directors and serves as the vice chair of the Institute of InternationalĀ Education (IIE) and on the Board of Governors for Argonne National Laboratory, and a member of theĀ Battelle Board of Directors. He is a member of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago,Ā on the Board of Directors of the Economic Club of Chicago and is immediate past chair of theĀ Greater Baltimore Committee. Butler also serves on the Board of Directors for the Cal Ripken, Sr.Ā Foundation, Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose, the Caves Valley Golf Club, and the AnnikaĀ Sorenstam Foundation, in addition to the James Madison Council of the Library of Congress. He is aĀ past chair of the GridWise Alliance, an advocacy organization promoting modernization and innovationĀ for the nation’s electrical grid. He has been recognized by several organizations for his leadership and community commitment. InĀ 2021, The Daily Record named Butler to their ā€œPower 100ā€ list and has singled him out as one of itsĀ top 35 ā€œInfluential Marylanders,ā€ as well as listing him three times as one of Maryland’s ā€œMost AdmiredĀ CEOs.ā€ In 2020, he was named among Black Enterprise magazine’s ā€œMost Influential Black Executives inĀ Corporate America,ā€ and as Zpryme’s ā€œETS Thought Leader of the Year,ā€ honoring those with theĀ ā€œinventive and brave vision needed to inspire the global energy ecosystem toward sustainableĀ 
modernization.ā€

In 2022, the Boy Scouts of America recognized him with the Distinguished Citizen Award. That same year, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture announced Butler as the first recipient of its ā€œTitan Award.ā€ He has also been named by Baltimore magazine as one of its ā€œTop Ten Baltimoreans.ā€ He is an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Ā 

EducationĀ 

Butler earned a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., and a Juris Doctor degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Mo. He received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Morgan State University in 2014.Ā
